The UK Chess Challenge

These pages are here to help promote the UK Chess Challenge competition.  They are intended to give you an idea of what to expect if you’ve never taken part before.  The UK Chess Challenge website states that it is the largest chess competition in the world.  Full details about the competition can be found on the www.ukchesschallenge.com website.

Well done
if you took part in 2009, and
Good chess
if you intend to take part in 2010.

The UK Chess Challenge is run over four stages.  It starts in the spring term with a competition either in your school or junior chess club.  It finishes in August when the best players from all over the country gather together, to find out who really is the best.  No matter who you are, or how well you play chess, everyone can win a prize.

Schools and junior clubs
You begin with a competition either in your school, or junior chess club.  Week by week, you compete against other players from your school or club.  There are several prizes you can play for:  The better you play, the better your prize.  If you play well, you can go on to the next stage (the Megafinal).

The Megafinal
In your school or club, you played games week by week.  When you get to the Megafinal, you will play all your games in just one day.  The Megafinal is normally held some time between late April and early June.  If you have been practicing and trying to learn from your mistakes, you should do well.  If you are successful, you can take part in the Gigafinal.

The Gigafinal
There are two separate Gigafinals, held in July.  The Gigafinal lasts two days, but you will play all your games in just one day:  If you are under 10 years old, you should play on Saturday.  If you are aged 10 or older, you should play on Sunday.  If you play well here, you can go on to national Terafinal.

The Terafinal
Finally, the very best players all gather together to compete in the national Terafinal.  The Terafinal is held in August.  This involves the top 65 players from all over the country, plus about 200 of the runners up.  All competing to find out who is the best player.  The Terafinal lasts two days.
