West of England Championships Details may change slightly from year to year, but this guide is intended to give you an idea of what to expect if you are interested in taking part in the West of England Championships.

Introduction
This competition is held in Swindon (Wiltshire) in February each year.
For skillful players, results from the Under 12 section of the West of England Championship count towards selection for the England Under 11 team trials.
The Getting selected box in the right hand column of this page tells you how the Under 12 section is organised.
If you're not familiar with the England trials, take a look at How to qualify.
Besides the U12 Championship, it has two day championships for: Under 18, Under 14, Under 10 and Under 9.
There are also one day championships (some held on Saturday, some on Sunday) for Under 8, Intermediate players, and a Beginners tournament.

Saturday & Sunday
These are part of:
ECF Junior Grand Prix,
John Robinson Grand Prix and
Ian Cowen Memorial Prix.
The Major championship is open to any player aged under 18.
The Under 16 championship is run as part of the Major.
Timetable
Each tournament is organised as a 5 round Swiss tournament.
Each player should make 30 moves in the first 75 minutes, with a 15 minute quickplay finish.
Play may continue until 7.30 on Saturday evening.

| Under 10 championship |

Saturday & Sunday
Part of:
ECF Junior Grand Prix and
John Robinson Grand Prix.
Timetable
This will be organised as a Swiss tournament with at least 6 rounds.
Each player has 65 minutes to make all their moves in each game.

|
Sunday
This includes an Under 7 championship.
Timetable
This will be organised as a Swiss tournament with at least 6 rounds.
Each player has 30 minutes to make all their moves in each game.

| Beginners championship |
|
Saturday.
These is open to players who are in their first year of chess competitions in school, and have played in no more than 2 open chess tournaments.
Players MUST be ungraded.
Timetable
This will be organised as a Swiss tournament with at least 6 rounds.
The number of games, and the time players have to play each game will be decided by the controller on the day.

Refreshments
Refreshments are available at all times during the championships.
Hot and cold meals will be available between 10am and 2pm on both days.

| Under 12 Championship |

| Minor & Under 12 challengers championships |

Saturday & Sunday
The Minor championship is open to any player aged under 18 who has a grade of under 145.
The Under 12 challengers' championship is open to players who have grades under 100 or are ungraded.

Each player has 65 minutes to make all their moves in each game.

This will be organised as a Swiss tournament with at least 6 rounds.
Each player has 65 minutes to make all their moves in each game.

| Intermediate championship |
|
There are two tournaments.
One will be played on Saturday, the other will be played on Sunday.
These are open to any player who has a rapidplay grade of Under 125 or is Ungraded.
Timetable
This will be organised as a Swiss tournament with at least 6 rounds.
The number of games, and the time players have to play each game will be decided by the controller on the day.

What is the timetable?
The Opening Ceremony will start at 9:45 am on Saturday.
All sections will start at 10 am on Saturday,
and 9:30 am on Sunday.
Prize giving will be at approximately 5:30 pm each day.
