Age

For the championship held in February 2009, your age will be based on how old you are at midnight at the end of 31st August, 2008.

Venue

The South of England Championships are held in School grounds in Camberley.

How is it run?

The South of England Championship is not a knockout tournament.  You will be given points after each game according to the result.

South of England Championships

Details may change slightly from year to year, but this guide is intended to give you an idea of what to expect if you are interested in taking part in the South of England Championships.  Full details can be found either on entry forms, or from Joe French (Congress Secretary).  Contact details in the right hand column.

Introduction
This competition is held in Camberley (Surrey) in February each year.

For skillful players, results from the Under 11 Major section of the South of England Championships count towards selection for the England Under 11 team trials.  The Getting selected box in the right hand column of this page tells you how the Under 11 Major section is organised.  If you're not familiar with the England trials, take a look at How to qualify.

Besides the U11 Major Championship, it has two day championships for: Under 18, Under 16, Under 13, Under 11 and Under 9.  There are also one day competitions (some held on Saturday, some on Sunday) for Under 8 and Under 7.

Two day tournaments

These championships, start on Saturday morning, and are played completion on Sunday.

There are usually 5 rounds:

Saturday Round 1 9.30 - 1.00 pm
Round 2 1.30 - 5.00 pm
Round 3 5.30 - 9.00 pm
Sunday Round 4 10.00 - 1.30 pm
Round 5 2.00 - 5.30 pm

Under 11 Minor and Under 9 championships

Timetable
There are usually 6 rounds:

Saturday Round 1 9.30 - 11.50 am
Round 2 12.20 - 2.40 pm
Round 3 3.10 - 5.30 pm
Sunday Round 4 9.30 - 11.50 am
Round 5 12.20 - 2.40 pm
Round 6 3.10 - 5.30 pm

One day tournaments

These championships last just one day.  Some are played on Saturday, others are played on Sunday.

Saturday Challengers Tournament

  • Under 7

This tournament lasts just one day, and is for players aged under 7.  At the end of the competition, there will be trophy prizes for the first four places, and every player taking part will receive a certificate.

Sunday Challengers Tournament

  • Under 8

This tournament lasts just one day, and is for players aged under 8.  At the end of the competition, there are trophy prizes for the first four places, and every player taking part will receive a certificate.

Refreshments.
A variety of refreshments will be available at all times during the championships.

Each player plays one game per round.  Each round is followed by a break for refreshments etc.

Prizes.
Prize giving will be held at 5.30 pm or later.

Certificates will be available for every player who takes part.

Getting selected

You are taking part in the South of England Championships because you want to be selected for the England U11 team trials.  You should compete in the Under 11 Major section.

Timetable
This is a two day championship starting on Saturday morning.  There are normally 5 rounds, with the following timetable:

Round 1 9.30 am
Round 2 1.30 pm
Round 3 5.30 pm
Sunday
Round 4 10.00 am
Round 5 2.00 pm

Swiss

A Swiss tournament is organised so that:

  • You don't play the same opponent twice.
  • In each round, you will face an opponent who has a similar score to yours.
  • You should play a similar number of games as black and white.
