EPSCA Rapidplay Championship The EPSCA Rapidplay Championship is organised by EPSCA (The English Primary Schools Chess Association).
Details may change slightly from year to year, but this page is intended to give you an idea of what to expect if you are interested in taking part.

Introduction
This a good competition for primary school children to take part in.
It is a one day competition, held in Liverpool, in January each year.
It has a section for novices and more advanced players in each age group from under 8, to 11.
For skillful players, results from the top section of the EPSCA rapidplay count towards selection for the England Under 11 team trials.

Who can take part?
To take part in January 2010, you must have been under 11 years old at the end of 31st August 2009.

Where is it held?
The EPSCA Rapidplay is normally held inside school grounds in Liverpool.

What is the timetable?
The tournament lasts from roughly 11am to 6pm.
There are usually 6 rounds:

11.10 - 12.00 noon |

12.20 - 1.10 pm |

1.30 - 2.20 pm |

2.40 - 3.30 pm |

3.50 - 4.40 pm |

5.00 - 5.50 pm |
Each player plays one game per round.
Each round is followed by a break for refreshments etc.
The presentation of prizes etc takes place at about 5.50 pm.

Prizes.
In each section,
The Winner will receive a trophy.
The Runner-up will receive a medal.
The presentation of prizes etc takes place at about 5.50 pm in each section.

How are the sections organised?
Entries are divided into seven seperate sections to suit age and ability.
For more skillful players:
- Under 11 Open.
(This section is a qualifier for the England Under 11 Team Trials.)
- Under 10, section A.
- Under 9, section A.
For novices and less skillful players:
- Under 11, section B.
- Under 10, section B.
- Under 9, section B.
Plus a separate section, especially for the under 8s:
NOTE:
If you are interested in qualifying for an England U11 trial place, you should enter the Under 11 Open section - even if you are under 10.

Rate of play.
Each player is expected to use a chess clock, and has 25 minutes to complete all the moves in each game.
