Thank you

Thanks must go to Traci Whifield for the time she spent organising and looking after the team.  Also, for sending the details for this report.

The 2009 Under 11 team

Ten teams went to North Chadderton Upper School in Oldham on 21 March for EPSCA's under 11 zone championships.  Just 5 of those teams would qualify for the final, would ours be one of them?

Each team was made up of 20 players plus 4 reserves.  Like the Under 9 team, Staffordshire's Under 11 team was made up of players from the combined Birmingham and Staffordshire areas, selected because of their performances in school, local and national competitions.  The team that went to Oldham were:

1

Leo Tsoi

(England U11 team trials qualifier)
2

Edward Davies

3

Hari Nijjar

4

Si-Woo Kim

5

Aman Chawla

6

Ashwin Kalyana

7

Ashrit Chohan

8

Prittam Mandair

9

Sajan Sanghera

10

Jack Healings

11

Matthew Fergusson

12

David Kay

13

Rishi Sanger

14

Mia Villon

15

Jacob Cartlidge

16

Emma Crick

17

Rory Knipe

18

Tom Davies

19

Karan Gohill

20

Sam Beardmore

There were also 4 reserve players - just in case someone was taken ill etc.  A special competition was set up just for them.  Our reserve competition team was:

1

Skye Wiggins

2

Manpreet Mandair

3

Sanam Chawla

4

Jacob Boswell

The opposition was strong and every one of our players had to fight hard for points in each of the three rounds.  Special mention must go to Hari Nijjar, Ashwin Kalyana (Still aged Under 9!) and David Kay who all achieved perfect scores 3 out of 3 and also to Leo Tsoi who scored 2½ points against other counties board 1 players.

The team finished in fifth place, level with Oldham on 30½ points.  Only five teams can qualify for the final, so a tie-breaker was required.  Looking at the number of wins and draws for each team, Staffordshire had 29 wins and 3 draws, while Oldham had 30 wins and 1 draw.  Because they had more wins, Oldham qualified for the final.

Well done to all the players
