Age

For the championships held in October 2009, your age was based on how old you were at midnight at the end of 31st August, 2008.

Venue

The English Under 11 is normally held inside school grounds in Nottingham.

How is it run?

The English U11 Championship is not a knockout tournament.  You will be given points after each game according to the result.

English Under 11 Championships

Details may change slightly from year to year, but this guide is intended to give you an idea of what to expect if you are interested in taking part in the English U11 Championships.  Full details can be found either on entry forms, or from from David Levens.  Contact details in the right hand column.

Introduction
This two day tournament is held in Nottingham in October each year.

For skillful players, results from the English U11 Championship count towards selection for the England Under 11 team trials.  The Getting selected box in the right hand column of this page tells you how it is organised.  If you're not familiar with the England trials, take a look at How to qualify.

There are no separate sections in this competition, all players are grouped together.  Who you play in each round will depend on your results as the tournament progresses.  Three games are played on Saturday, and two more on Sunday.

What is the timetable?
There are normally 5 rounds:

Saturday

Round 1 9.30 am - 12.30 pm
Round 2 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm
Round 3 4.30 pm - 7.30 pm

Sunday:

Round 4 9.30 am - 12.30 pm
Round 5 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm

Prizes.
Prizes will be trophies and certificates.

The presentation of prizes etc takes place at about 4.00 pm on Sunday.

Rate of play.
Each player is expected to use a chess clock.

You must make at least 30 moves in one hour.  After the 30th move, both clocks are set back 30 minutes and you must finish the game in the time remaining.

Who can take part?
To take part in October 2009, you must have been under 11 years old on 1st September 2009.

You must also have at least one of the following:

  • You were born in England,
  • Either, or both of your parent were born in England, or
  • You lived in England continuously for at least three years, at any time.

Each player plays one game per round.  Each round is followed by a break for refreshments etc.

Getting selected

You are taking part in the English U11 Championships because you want to be selected for the England U11 team trials.  All players compete against each other in this competition, so there is no special section you have to enter.

Timetable
This is a two day championship starting on Saturday morning.  There are normally 5 rounds, with the following timetable:

Sunday
Round 4 9.30 am
Round 5 1.00 pm

Rate of play
You must make at least 30 moves in 60 minutes, followed by a 30 minute quickplay finish.
